MEDIA RELEASE – LISA WILKINSON TO PRESENT ANDREW OLLE LECTURE 2013

For Immediate Release
21 July 2013

702 ABC Sydney is pleased to announce that one of Australia’s most admired and respected female media professionals will present the annual Andrew Olle Media Lecture on Friday 25 October 2013.

“The ABC is delighted to have Lisa Wilkinson delivering the Andrew Olle Media Lecture this year” said Mark Scott, Managing Director ABC.

“Lisa is smart and incisive and has had dazzling success with whatever she has turned her hand to in the Australian media. She understands the nature of news, the complexities of the media business and how to communicate in a way that attracts and engages millions of Australians. We all admi re her talent and achievements. There will be wide interest as she reflects on insights from her career and the state of the industry in this year’s lecture.”

For more than two decades, Lisa has worked across the Australian media landscape, first in magazine publishing, then on radio and television. Since 2007 she has co-hosted the Nine Network’s Today Show.

Lisa’s first high profile media appointment was as editor of Dolly magazine at age 21. Four years later, after almost tripling the circulation, Lisa was head-hunted by the late Kerry Packer, who offered her the editorship of
Cleo magazine. Over the next decade, Lisa guided the magazine to new circulation highs, making it the No.1 selling women’s lifestyle magazine per capita in the world.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to be asked by the ABC to deliver this year’s Andrew Olle Lecture,” says Lisa Wilkinson. “I had the pleasure of knowing Andrew and he really was the journalist’s journalist. Looking at the list of past
presenters is a little daunting and to be only the second female journalist invited to deliver the lecture makes it even more special and I really hope I can do it justice.”

The Andrew Olle Media Lecture is held in honour of one of the ABC’s iconic broadcasters, Andrew Olle.  After Andrew died of a brain tumour in 1995 his widow, Annette, set up a Trust to encourage brain cancer research. In recent years the Olle Fund for Brain Cancer Research has supported Dr Kerrie McDonald, who is now Head of the Neuro Oncology (brain cancer) Group at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre (part of the University of NSW). The Lowy Cancer Research Centre is one of the largest adult and child cancer research centres in the southern hemisphere.

The Andrew Olle Media Lecture focuses on the role and future of the media. The Lecture has continued to grow in stature since its inception in 1996. Lisa Wilkinson follows a long line of distinguished speakers, including Mark Colvin, Alan Rusbridger, Laurie Oakes, Julian Morrow, Ray Martin, John Hartigan, Senator Helen Coonan, John Doyle, Chris Anderson, Harold Mitchell AO, Lachlan Murdoch, Kerry Stokes AO, Eric Beecher, Steve Vizard, John Alexander, Jana Wendt and David Williamson.

It will be delivered at a black tie dinner at the Australian Technology Park, in Redfern, Sydney on Friday 25 October. The evening will be hosted by 702 ABC Sydney Drive presenter Richard Glover.

Tickets are on sale now for $170 (GST incl) or $1700 (GST incl) for a table of 10.

Please phone 0422 580 043 or email [email protected] for bookings.

The event will be audio-streamed live on abc.net.au/sydney and on ABC NewsRadio Friday 25 October at 9pm and broadcast in Sydney on 702 ABC Sydney on Saturday 26 October at 11.00am. The event will also be televised on the ABC in November.
